An August Wedding at O’Brien’s Farm | Sarah & Devon

Sarah and Devon’s August wedding at O’Brien’s Farm in Newfoundland was a celebration rooted in history, family, and intention. As a Newfoundland wedding photographer, this day was especially meaningful.

I’ve worked with this couple since the very first year of my photography business, and documenting their wedding felt like a full-circle moment. Set on one of the hottest days of the summer, their wedding embraced the relaxed, open-air atmosphere that makes farm weddings in Newfoundland so memorable.

O’Brien’s Farm Wedding in Newfoundland

O’Brien’s Farm is one of those venues that offers space to slow down and truly experience the day. With its rustic landscape and open fields, it creates a natural backdrop for couples who want their wedding to feel personal rather than staged.

For Sarah and Devon, the farm allowed their guests to gather, connect, and enjoy the celebration without feeling rushed... something that came through clearly in the photographs.

A Hot August Wedding with a Relaxed Cocktail Hour

August weddings in Newfoundland bring long daylight hours and golden evening light — and plenty of summer heat. Between the ceremony and dinner, guests cooled off during cocktail hour with Sweet Rock Ice Creamery, an ideal addition to such a warm day.

This day was sunny and warm, and the couple just wanted to explore around the farms and do the whole session at the venue. So we explored all the nooks and crannies of this location.

Chinese Tea Ceremony

As a dedicated Newfoundland photographer, capturing the unique love stories of couples like Sarah and Devon is always a privilege. Their August wedding was a beautiful blend of personal touches and cherished traditions, making for an unforgettable day. Set against the picturesque backdrop of O'Brien's Farm, just outside St. John's, their celebration truly shone. Among the many heartfelt moments, the traditional Chinese tea ceremony stood out as a particularly poignant and visually rich part of their union. This ancient ritual, deeply symbolic in Chinese culture, honours the elders and expresses gratitude, while also serving as a formal introduction of the bride and groom to their families as a married couple. It's a moment of respect, unity, and a beautiful affirmation of family bonds, all witnessed and celebrated before the joyous reception.

A Whimsical Reception at O’Brien’s Farm: Butterflies, Bliss, and Best-In-Class Buffet

When it came to the reception, Sarah and Devon truly made the space their own. As a Newfoundland photographer, I’ve seen many St. John’s weddings, but the atmosphere at O’Brien’s Farm for this August celebration was uniquely enchanting. The couple leaned into a stunning ethereal theme, scattering delicate butterfly details throughout the venue that felt like something out of a fairyland.

What really stole the show, however, was the food!

Sarah and Devon treated their guests to the ultimate comfort feast: a spread of Mary Brown’s and delicious Chinese food. It was easily some of the best wedding grub I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing (and smelling!)

Beyond the aesthetic and the eats, the practical side of O’Brien’s Farm really saved the day. Their top-of-the-hill indoor/outdoor setup is a game-changer for Newfoundland weather; it allowed us to enjoy the rugged beauty of the landscape while staying perfectly sheltered from the rain. It was the perfect blend of "rugged rock" and "ethereal elegance."

Golden Hour at O’Brien’s Farm: A Dreamy Family Session to End the Day

As the August sun began to dip behind the hills of St. John’s, we stole a quiet moment away from the reception crowd for an intimate family session. There is something truly magical about a Newfoundland photographer getting to work with that soft, "golden hour" light—especially at a location as historic and textured as O’Brien’s Farm.

While the guests enjoyed the view from the top of the hill, Sarah, Devon, and their adorable kiddo headed down toward the farmhouse. The result was pure magic. Capturing the three of them against the weathered wood of the farm as the sky turned to honey was the perfect, peaceful bookend to such a high-energy day. These are the raw, tender moments that make St. John's weddings so special; it wasn't just about the party, but about the beautiful family unit they’ve built.

Let’s Capture Your Story

From the intimate Chinese tea ceremony to the butterfly-filled reception at O’Brien’s Farm, Sarah and Devon’s day was a masterclass in how to make a wedding truly personal. As a Newfoundland photographer, there is nothing I love more than documenting these "perfectly you" moments—whether they involve a hike up a hill for the sunset or a late-night feast of Mary Brown’s!

If you’re currently planning your own St. John’s wedding and looking for someone to capture the ethereal details, the raw family moments, and everything in between, I’d love to chat.
